Week 1-2

First Project for the 2nd Semester-

Altered Book-

An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its meaning. An altered book artist takes a book (old, new, recycled or multiple) and cuts, tears, glues, burns, folds, paints, adds to, collages, rebinds, gold-leafs, creates pop-ups, rubber-stamps, drills, bolts, and/or be-ribbons it. The artist may add pockets and niches to hold tags, rocks, ephemera, or other three-dimensional objects. Some change the shape of the book, or use multiple books in the creation of the finished piece of art. Altered books may be as simple as adding a drawing or text to a page, or as complex as creating an intricate book sculpture. Antique or Victorian art is frequently used, probably because it is easier to avoid copyright issues. Altered books are shown and sold in art galleries and on the Internet.

Project- after looking at the websites below, develop an idea for a them of an altered book you are to create yourself.
Your book will be different than some of the art students because you will include a collection of your own photographs.
At least 8 double page spreads, 60% of the images on each spread should be photos you have shot. You can use painter techniques, collage of found images, collage of found objects, included words on the pages, but 60% of the images should be your own.
I have some books, if you can find one yourself. You need an overall theme- ex. Collection of things that make me happy, The Keys to My Success, The Worst day of My Life, etc.

Major Project -2

Ideas- Reflections!

Can you list ten things that would reflect your image? (try and turn in)
What ways could you make these images more interesting? (other people in image, backgrounds, hands, etc. -list on same page)

1. Check out the website linked below to discover some new ideas?
As you view these, copy off and write down at least 10 ideas that really inspire you.

6. Series of Photos with a Common Element
     ( Photo within a photo?)

Project:  A "series" of six prints will be due which have a common theme.
Consider shooting each of these types and develop an idea for each of the different areas below.
Include these in your notebook, along with your choice for your shoot.

SIX similar subjects in very different contexts
SIX different subjects in very similar contexts
SIX photos with a common element (object or concept)
SIX photos that follow a progression (could be a progression in time, or a progression of change)
SIX photos that tell us a story

7. "Night Photography"- During class this week, research (using the internet) "night photography". Find as much as you can about this "subject"- times to use, film to use, shutter speeds, painting with light, use of flash at night, how to shoot lightening, etc.
Complete this first, because during this week you will need to go out and shoot at least 1 roll and possibly 2 rolls of ideas dealing with "night photography". I want you to be developing film on , this gives you Tuesday-Monday nights to shoot.
You will be using one of my Pentax cameras, tripod and cable releases (take care of my equipment)!
Before you begin, please write down at least 6 ideas (yes you can try different ideas once you start, but you need to have a plan!)
Use your imagination, my expectations are very high for your projects.
