Designing a Logotype:
Designing your personal logotype-
Before you begin working in Photoshop, you need to complete some questions
regarding yourself.
On the same page that completed the "logohomework" (word) answer the following
questions:
#1 List 5-10 words that describe your feelings or qualities you think of when
you think of your personality
#2 List 5-10 things that are associated with you (hobbies, interest, sports,
clubs, etc.)
# 3 Type out your initials/ name in as many combinations as possible and with
some different fonts
(ex.- JV, JDV, JimV, JVersch, JDVersch, JV, JDV, JimV,
JVersch, JDVersch, JV, JDV, JimV, JVersch,
JDVersch,
JV, JDV, JimV, JVersch, JDVersch,
JV, JDV, JimV, JVersch, JDVersch,
1. Font: (Open Photoshop) open a new page
(400x300 pixels). On your new page begin to experiment with your
initials/name, play with different types of font ( don't forget abour our two
different font workshops)
To achieve some interesting fonts try:
1.
Vertical
and horizontal strokes are unitied.
2. Curved and Vertical Letters
3.
Explore combining both upper and lower case letters in the same logotype.
4. Explore whole words.
5.
Crossbars: Elongate and play with the mid- letter crossbars on combined
letterforms.
6.
Crop the parts of the letters that make up the acronyms
7.
Make Text readable by applying a line that flows through or around the
letterform(s).
8.
Try different color backgrounds, shapes and color arrangements to help maintain
a unified, visual effect with the letters.
9. Place
symbols in the open counters of the letters.
With all of the preliminaries completed now let's begin-
Your logo requirements:
1. Must include your initials (JV or JDV), first initial and last name
(JVersch), first name and last initial (JimV) or first and second initial and
last name (JDVersch)
2. Must include a symbol or simplified artwork ( at least one, no more than
three)
3. Must include a geometric some where in design (circle, square, triangle,
diamond, etc.), could be used inside oe logo or as it's border/frame
4. Limited to three colors- a white page is not a color, a black line is, one
graduation could be utilized
This would count for one color.
5. Must include at least 3 different logos.
Grade Criteria
Your grade will be
based on the following:
How well you followed these instructions.
Craftsmanship: Neatness of the work,
attention to details and presentation (clean and simple)
Includes all of the elements listed above.
Creativity: Dynamic explorations of both the
type choices and graphic combinations.
Well thought out ideas that are unique interpretations...the images should
maintain symbolic qualities and show variety of a concept...the simplicity of
the forms are important.
Creating an outline around your font-
|
After using some creative techniques to join or add to letters. |
Select white as your color (in color picker) , add a stroke of 16 pixels to your letters layer. (red was added so you could see white outline) | Now add a black outline, by adding a stroke to letters, stroke 2 pixels (in black) |
|
|
|
|
2. Symbols/Simplified Images: you have now created some cool font and need to begin to work on your images/symbols that will compliment your logo's font. (remember you must use one and no more than three). Your image should be simple and limited in colors., you could change these yourself in Photoshop.

Here is my original image , that I borrowed from the
internet. Saved to my folder and opened in photoshop |

Same image, with "filter " added- (Filter-Sketch-graphic pen) |

Same photo , but just a small section selected. Can you still tell it is a mandolin? |

Same photo as above, with filter added (Filter- Artistic-Poster Edges) |
Search the internet for images you could use, could be from a
variety of web sites.
Save these to your folder and open in Photoshop, experiment with different ways
to achieve simplicity of images. Remember sometimes just a part of an image is
as strong as seeing the whole image.
3. Geometric Shapes-
One of the easiest ways to create a shape is to use the selector tool and
created a selected shape on a blank page. Flood fill the area with white, change
color to black and add a stroke around your white shape. You now have a black
outline shape. (other colors could be your outline, experiment with colors or
gradients inside of shape).

A stroke of white added and then a stroke of black added (each 3 pixels). Outside area selected -fake drop shadow added with airbrush. |
