"Chairs
as Art"
This is a unit on chairs as art, in this project you will discover
the history of chairs, the vast array of unique chairs and create a chair
sculpture yourself.
I. Using the internet, books or encyclpedias research the history
of the chair
creating a visual timeline, that illustrates the "chairs" beginning
and alteration throughout history.
Your timeline should have at least 8 entries and illustrations/photos
to accompany them.
This project could be done in pairs or as an individual.
II. Using the web addresses below or ones you find yourself,
find 5 very unique chairs-
print off photos of them and glue in sketchbook.

I. and II. are due by Thursday Feb. 10th-2000

III. A. Bring in an old chair ( of little value, parental
permission first) or plan on building one yourself.
B. Think of themes that
you would like to use to enhance/ alter your chair ( childrens, sports,
music, ecology, great works of art, emotions, trends, etc.).
C. In sketchbook create
some rough drawings, outlining ideas for your theme and change you will
make to the chair. You must have a theme, plus you must alter your chair
(addition or subtraction of something).
D. Begin working on chair
or building the chair. You can paint, collage or ????? to enhance the overall
theme of the chair. You must do something to cover at least 80% of the
natural finish.
You must alter (add or subtract) at least 20% of your chair (adding
objects, other parts of chairs, cut-out decorations or ?????)
Your chair should demonstrate high levels of
creativity and craftsmanship.
